Egg Tempera Painting

Egg tempera is a painting process that uses egg yolk to bind paint pigments. The paint is then applied in multiple thin layers where the optical laws of colors, pigments and egg tempera are obeyed so that the unique translucent quality of egg tempera paint film will be achieved. Egg tempera paint film is believed by some to be more permanent and less yellow with age than oil.

Egg tempera painting is recognised as the second oldest medium after encaustic. It was used by the ancient Egyptians and Greeks and perfected by the icon painters during the last 100 years of the old Byzantine Empire (400 AD-1202 AD). Icon painters of the Orthodox Church never broke the tradition and are still practicing egg tempera today.
